Walter on the Tango:
Many
Tango dancers - including my friends - are searching for an authentic
Tango outside the stereotypes, the romantic clichés of the Tango,
but I'm not. I enjoy the stereotypes of the macho man and the self-consciously
sexy woman. I love the image of the passionate embrace, the allusions
to mystery, depravity and intrigue. It's something that I take great pleasure
in sharing with my students.
I believe that these archetypes are an essential part of the Tango
and that by embracing these clichés, dancers can tap into their
individual sexuality. The Tango woman is a powerful presence. She demands
her time and space, while yielding - for the length of the song - to her
dominant partner. It's a compelling dynamic - the push and pull of two
equally determined forces in a classic, romantic dance on the edge of
oblivion.
Celebrate the cliché,
enjoy it, embrace it! |
